Both belonging to the cat family, tigers and lions are both ferocious animals with no predators.  However, they also have many differences.

Physical Characteristics

The primary difference of these carnivores is their physical features. A lion is known for its mane with colors varying from blond to black.  With its strong jaw and long canine teeth, lions have a variation of fur color from yellow or red to dark brown.

On the other hand, tigers are known for their unique set of stripes similar to human fingerprints, meaning none are the same. Their stripes are mostly black on their orange fur, while others have tan stripes on their black or white fur.

Although lions are strong in general, tigers are in fact stronger. They are more muscular, more active and have better agility compared to lions.

They also tend to be more aggressive as lions are considered to be lazy animals. Most male lions just sleep around, doing nothing unless they really have to get up and do something.

Commonly, lions live in large groups of 10 or 15 called “prides” with one male lion as the head of the tribe. Males take the role of guarding their territory, while the female acts as the primary hunter.

They are in charge of hunting food for their tribe in the savannah. The females will then bring back their prey and let the males eat first.

Different from lions, who are sociable, tigers are solitary animals. They are very territorial and prefer to live on their own.

Their territories could be up to 10,000 square kilometers in size and are normally scent-marked. However, tigers must give access to female tigers during mating season. Unlike lions that hunt for their pride, tigers hunt alone and will eat their prey by themselves.
