Bear Origins

Classified as caniforms or “dog-like”, Bears are carnivoran mammals of the family Ursidae. Common characteristics of this mammals include large bodies with stocky legs, long snouts, small rounded ears and shaggy hair.

Only eight species are extant on the planet such as North America, South America, Europe, and Asia. While the polar bear is mostly carnivorous, and the giant panda feeds almost entirely on bamboo, the remaining six species are omnivorous with varied diets.

Have an excellent sense of smell, bears are typically solitary animals. Bears is being hunt since prehistoric times for their meat and fur. In modern times, bears have come under pressure through encroachment on their habitats and illegal trade in bear parts, including the Asian bile bear market.

According to IUCN, six bears species listed as vulnerable or endangered, and even least concern species. The poaching and international trade of these most threatened populations are prohibited, but still ongoing.

How To Celebrate?

Interpreting from the purpose of the day, we can do something in many ways for the sake of the bears. It can be donating funds, educate other people about the existence of bears, or visit the conservation institution such as Bali Safari Park.
