Like its name, the Bali Starling is the only bird species that is endemic to Bali island, Indonesia. In honor, this rare species is emblemizing on local currency (Indonesian 200 rupiah coin).
Habitat
Also known as Jalak Bali by locals, they restricted only in the island of Bali and its offshore islands Indonesia.
They usually live in bushes and palm trees in the open woodland, scrub forest and grassland. In its natural habitat it is inconspicuous, using tree tops for cover. They only coming to the ground to drink or to find nesting materials. In the wild, this bird can have life span about 7 years.
Characteristics
This birds have medium size, weigh about 75 – 100 gram with 21 – 25 cm body length. It is almost wholly white with a long, drooping crest, black wing-tips and tail tip. It has a yellow bill with blue bare skin around the eyes and legs. The male Bali starlings have a longer crest than the female.
Diet
This bird have diet in its natural habitat includes fruit, seeds, worms and insects. They often gathers in groups when it is young to better locate food and watch out for predators.
Conservation & Breeding Program
Their breeding season is on the rainy season of Bali, which takes place between September-December. The Bali Starling will fly in pairs while looking for food. The female can laying and incubating 2-3 eggs, with 12-15 incubation periods. Both males and females will bring food to the nest for chicks after hatching.
since 1994, in the wild Bali Starling have a Critically Endangered status and close to extinction. it is cause due to deforestation, poaching and illegal trading.
Hence, Bali Safari Park has taken the initiative and has successfully rehabilitated the starling under a conservation program. Now it’s estimated there are approximately about more than 200 individuals remain in the world. Click here for more info!
