Native to Indonesia islands, these monkeys likes to eat young leaves and known as “The Old World” Monkeys. They are called as The East Javan Langur or Javan Lutung!

Also known as Lutung Budeng by locals, this langur is so unique to the point they can be distinguish easily. Let us spilling you a bunch of information about them!

Where is Their Habitat?

The East Javan Langurs (Trachypithecus auratus) originally native to several of the surrounding Indonesian islands. They inhabits the interior and peripheral areas of rainforests of Bali, Java, Lombok, Palau Sempu and Nusa Barung.

The Noticable Long Tails!

Like all langurs, The East Javan Langurs is noticeably long! It can measuring up to 98 cm in length while the body is only around 55 cm long.

More of that, the males and females have glossy black with a brownish tinge to its legs, sides, and “sideburns”. But the females have more pale, yellowish white patch around the pubic area. The Latin word auratus in its scientific name means “golden”, and refers to a less common color variant.

Lifestyles & Behaviours

This langurs have a sociable instinct, they live in a groups around seven individuals with one or two adult males. Although the females look after offspring of other mothers in the group, they are aggressive towards females from other groups. This species has no discernible mating season and females can produce one to two offsprings at a time.

Its diet is primarily herbivorous, they like to eat leaves, fruits, vegetables, and also flower buds. However, they have a specific favorite diet which is young and fresh leaves. Because of this inconvenient diet, they famous as the picky eaters!

Threats

In the wild, East Javan Langurs are primarily Vulnerable due to lost of habitats. Humans are cutting down the forests where they live to make way for agriculture. Many people still abides by the law and there is little enforcement, so hunting is still happening.
