First of all, not all species that belong to the family Felidae can be called The Cats. Let’s call it “The Domestic Cats” to distinguish it from the wild members of the family.

The Domestic Cats can either be a house cat, farm cat, feral cat, the latter ranging freely or avoid human. Did you know enough about these furry mammals?

World’s Most Invasive Species

The domestic cats are cosmopolitan species and occurs across much of the world. They are well-adapted, present on all continents except Antarctica, even exists on the isolated Kerguelen Islands.

Due to its ability to thrive in almost any terrestrial habitat, make them become the world’s most invasive species. Not only that, they can readily interbreed with the wildcat, make the numbers increase in advance.

How Cats See the World

Cats have a wider field of view and a greater range of peripheral vision, make them easily spot the mouse.

Because cats lack the muscles necessary to change the shape of their eye lenses, they can’t see things clearly like humans and need to be further away. Cats may be near-sighted, but their peripheral vision and night vision are much better than that of humans!

The domestic cats share many behavior with their jungle ancestors like tiger according to Layla Morgan Wilde. These behaviors include scent marking by scratching, prey play, prey stalking, pouncing, chinning, and urine marking.

No Ability to Taste Sweetness

Did you already know, they are the only mammals that can’t taste a sweetness! Cats only have a few taste buds compared to humans.

Domestic and wild cats share a taste receptor gene mutation that keeps their sweet taste buds from binding to sugary molecules, leaving them with no ability to taste sweetness. Instead, it response to acid, protein and bitter tastes.

A Sleepy Head

Cats conserve energy by sleeping more than most animals, especially as they grow older. The daily duration of sleep varies, usually between 13 and 14 hours in averages. Some cats can sleep as much as 20 hours! The term “cat nap” for a short rest refers to the cat’s tendency to fall asleep (lightly) for a brief period.
